SIXTEEN

The “Happy Halloween” banner has lost some of the luster from earlier as we head directly to the season pass entrance. Brandon clutches the laptop in his hand, still wrapped in the festival bag. With evening upon us, the lines appear slightly longer than this morning. Paranormals are finally done with their work day and arriving to celebrate the holiday in fashion.

Lark Woodman, the fairy in charge of the quick-pass entrance, waves us through, allowing us to step around a few other people. The werewolf behind us grumbles about favoritism as we enter the festival for the third time today. Brandon takes my hand.

We don’t waste a moment weaving our way to my cousin’s booth. The crowd is thick, making our progress slow. A group of werewolves talk in a circle in the middle of the walkway, causing everyone to walk around them to get by. When we finally break through the crowd, we turn down the aisle to get to the booth for Computer Guru.

The cartoon video of my cousin and his boyfriend still plays on the vast screen outside, but people aren’t swarmed around like they had been earlier in the day. When we step into the booth that looks exactly like their shop on the main street of Moonflower, there are only four people inside—definitely a big difference from last time.

We walk down an aisle with shelves full of monitors, keyboards, and other computer parts. An older werewolf couple debates a tablet’s merits beside one of the display cases. This time, I can hear the soft music Ethan has playing in the background.

“I hope Cameron being questioned by the Paranormal Council isn’t keeping people from the booth,” I say.

“It could just be a lull in the day.” Brandon steps around the couple, not letting go of my hand.

Mattie and Cameron exit the back room, the young mermaid pointing to a vampire, tapping his hand on the counter.

“Mattie says you want to try to get entered into the free laptop contest,” Cameron says to the vampire, who nods in reply. “I must warn you, a wrong answer could cause adverse effects. Here is your question: What is the standard method to remove the Curse of the Visitor?”

I slow down to see what the vampire answers. Glancing around the tent, the other people also watch the man’s attempt at winning a free laptop.

His hand goes to his chin, rubbing the small amount of stubble. “You start with the Purge Soul Spell with the addition of Moon Moss into the cauldron right before it turns… purple.”

Cameron pauses, looking around at everyone. “Correct,” he yells.

A cheer goes through the room as Brandon pulls lightly on my arm, indicating we need to keep moving. Good for the vampire. I don’t even know what Curse of the Visitor is, so I could never attempt for an entry into the contest. I bet Becca knows, though. Cameron has taken over the curse portion of her training since she showed an affinity for it.

Brandon leads me through the curtain to the area the guys use for their computer hub while at the festival.
